2025 | Radical Futures: Fertile Ground
Let's Talk
Placed in a talking circle, six domestic chairs invite us to take time to sit, talk, and most importantly, listen to 'other' points of view regarding both past and innovative ideas concerning fire and fire use. The work creates a space ,'fertile ground', where our community might find shared understanding of fire ecology. It proposes a place to question, critique and understand our domestic responsibility of using fire to manage country.
Our 'houses' are placed at the centre of the talking circle to establish the point of view that we are at the core of this issue. The work also uses a variety of materials to communicate our personal responsibilities for fire management; for example, introduced invasive species like Kikuya and Guildford Grass, which create elevated fire fuel, and Arum Lilies which spread rapidly after fire. These feral plants typify many invasive species which compete with native species preventing the restoration of natural and more manageable ecosystems.
