2022 | Esperance Book Project

Artist in Residence at the Esperance Community Arts Space.

July and August 2022

ARTIST STATEMENT

The brief was to construct a recycled book sculpture for the Esperance Library.

I welded a frame to support the book sculptures and together with the community constructed a reading bower.

The interior of the bower consisted of 1200 hand folded oragami 5cm square boxes of recycled book pages. The community was invited to draw, paint, write, sew, knit or crochet small statements of what living in Esperance meant to them. The result, from this multicultural community, was heart-warming. Beautiful tiny statements of love of home and of a very special place in the hearts and minds of those who live there.

The exterior consists of rows of folded books in various patterns.

It was a tremendous undertaking by the community and very satisfying for me.
