2009 | Whose Flag?
This land is my land: is this land your land?
Camouflage: to hide or conceal, a disruptive pattern
National flag: a visual semiotic to a people's collective political and patriotic sentiments
The interplay of colour, hand stitched blanket, chair and floor establish solid notions of the domestic and civilization. The uncomfortable dissonance created by the flags exposes long accepted hierarchies camouflaged by Eurocentric hegemony.
The work disrupts established ideas of colour, nation, identity and recognised and accepted notions of knowing and being.
By interchanging colours on well recognised patterns the work challenges the viewer to rethink what the flags may mean and how one nation is privileged over another.
